Ithought I’d hallucinated Charlie’s voice, but then he was there, and I’d broken down and sobbed with relief. I absolutely hated how out of control of my body I felt, and the longer my heat went on, the worse the feeling got. When Charlie walked into my room, I was starving and on the brink of dehydration, and I hadn’t been in my right mind enough to attempt to solve any of my problems except to keep making myself come until this hell was over.

But then Charlie was there with food and water, and he made everything better. And he’d said such deliciously filthy things while I’d worked myself over that for the first time in days, I felt almost human postorgasm.

Human enough that I’d told Charlie the truth.

And he hadn’t run away.

He didn’t seem put off by the fact that I was a forty-three-year-old virgin, and he even said it would be up to me if I wanted to even take that step. A new wave of heat was closing in, my vision going blurry at the edges with lust as Charlie led me out of the bedroom and into the hall bathroom. He pulled the towel off the hook behind the door and draped it over the closed toilet, encouraging me to sit down while he started the water.

“Are you good to stay here for a minute while the water heats? I’m going to find some clean sheets.”

I nodded, my throat too thick to speak. Tears threatened as I realized that this was what Penny had said about having an alpha. I had assumed she just meant that being with an alpha for the sex would be better for me, but the way Charlie was caring for me was already so far beyond that. The bathroom was full of steam by the time Charlie returned, and it billowed out into the hall when he opened the door.

“Let’s get you cleaned up.” I was exhausted, even as my body pushed me again to find release, and I let Charlie help me over the lip of the tub into the shower.
